Meltdowns Residency 2009

Meltdowns Residency 2009

During this past summer, I undertook a four-week research and development residency at Meltdowns, an artist-run studio, and project space in Ramsgate, supported by The Fenton Arts Trust.

Here, I began to develop a research project, (A) Play of Three Magical Particles: Light, Dust, and Photographic Grain. I explored duration and documentation of time through the play of light, dust and the body, using photography (pinhole, medium format, video), installation, performance, writing and drawing. I experimented with the installation space, painted black, and the sieve, which I started thinking as kind of Albertian ‘intersector’, acting as an interface between body and dust, which sifted and transfered the particles. I explored performance activities, durational poses, holding the body, horizonal, attempting to suspend it within the image, and large photographic images. The photographs were made using a room-sized pinhole camera, which also doubled as a darkroom, housing huge paddling pools of chemicals.
